E arly History Researched from hall documents by Dean Sargent Rededication of the G.A.R. hall Jan 30, 1900 Guard of Honor : 4 members --
Representing Guard for Navy: C.W. Smith Representing Guard for Army: EC Poole A badge was ordered for the "Officer of the Day". A flag was presented by A.W. Perry Corporation which was brought from the old Hall. Post 13 presented the Post with a Gavel Block, which is now lost. The Cannons were ordered for the Hall and the Cemetery, a total of 4, at a cost of $2.00 for delivery to the train in Boston from the pier. Rockland GAR Hall circa 1900 Funeral services were sometimes held at the hall. One such case was the funeral of Jerry Fooby. "His death was honored by a National GAR Order". Daniel Sullivan of Post 74 represented a group of 4 men who were present at the Catholic Church to honor a local soldier who had died in the Philippine War. No mention was made of the soldier's name. Services were conducted by Rev O'Neil.
In 1900
, Picnics were held every Saturday at Hartsuff Park
in the months of July and August.
Comrade Kennedy was admitted to the solder's Home at Togus,
Maine.
On April 16, 1900
, the cannons arrived in the Rockland station and were
trucked to the Hall by D M O'Brien free of charge.
On Jan 13, 1902
, Francis D Sargent (a great Uncle of Dean's from Weymouth),
was transferred to Post 74 .
On Feb 3, 1902
, Mustering Officer George E Hunt was desirous of forming
a Camp of Sons of Veterans in Town and read a speech to
that effect.
On Feb 10, 1902
, a committee of 3 was chosen to confer with George E. Hunt
on the subject of the sons of Veterans.
On April 21, 1902
, the report was read by Mann and Beal on the Sons of
Veterans issue.
